    BEYOND THE PINK RIBBON
    A Community Townhall to Address the Epidemic of Breast Cancer.
    Thursday, October 23rd, 2003 - 6-8pm
    at the Hollywood Theatre - 4122 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland, OR

    BROADCAST LIVE ON KBOO 90.7 FM


    The Breast Cancer Project is a year-long project devoted to the topic of breast cancer at KBOO-FM under the direction of award-winning producers Dmae Roberts of MediaRites and Barbara Bernstein of the Media Project.

    The aim of this unique project is to create a new model for community partners to work together to create awareness on one health topic.

    The Breast Cancer Project includes:

  • Once a month call-in programs beginning April 16, 2003 on KBOO 90.7FM, 7:30-9:00am on Locus Focus with Barbara Bernstein and guest panels of experts and a series of 10 five-to-seven minute feature radio stories
  • Live town hall program and art event in October at the Hollywood Theatre
  • A unique mentorship program with six specially selected KBOO volunteers
  • Create a health beat model for KBOO radio to use in the future
  • Topics include:

  • Searching for a cause as well as a cure
  • Detection and treatment
  • Bridging the gap between complimentary and allopathic treatment
  • Caregivers: in the home, practical and emotional issues
  • Caregivers: in the hospital, the need for advocacy
  • Support groups: different models and needs
  • Costs of living with breast cancer
  • Ethnic and cultural differences and access to prevention and treatment
  • Lesbian community issues and models of support
  • Re-entry to the world.

  • OUTREACH

    The Breast Cancer Project begins with outreach to the general community. The main focus is to provide arts healing work and training through the talents of experienced artists to women, children, and families, as well as informing the general public about the benefits of creative writing, visual art, and media arts in the healing of the individual

    Workshops: all 10am - 1pm on Saturdays - Free to first 10 who register

    Memory Boxes, Visual Art with Ping Khaw

    Beginning in May we will have another series of workshops in a variety of arts. Please contact us to register.

    Artwork will be presented at a town hall event broadcast live on KBOO-FM radio October 23, 2003 and at an intimate performance at the Hollywood Theatre October 3rd and 4th. Workshop participants are encouraged to attend and take part if they choose.




    DOCUMENTARY

    A two-hour radio documentary of the Breast Cancer Project will be produced and distributed nationally in October 2003 during Breast Cancer Awareness month.

    The documentary material will be produced from

  • 10 feature stories produced during the year
  • monthly live call-in programs
  • arts outreach workshops of writings and feedback interviews
  • interviews of national and local experts
  • This two-hour radio documentary special will be distributed to 200 public stations around the country hosted by Barbara Bernstein and Dmae Roberts. A complimentary web site BreastCancerProject.org is in development as part of the project to field questions, refer resources and links of research material and offer a discussion section for listeners. CDs will also be made available to the public at a reasonable cost.

    Major funding for the Breast Cancer Project was provided by:

    Soundpartners for Community Health from the Benton Foundation and the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation.

    With support for the arts outreach workshops through the Regional Arts and Culture Council and the Oregon Arts Commission.
